Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) is the concentration of alcohol in the bloodstream, expressed as a percentage. A BAC of 0.08% means 0.08 grams of alcohol per 100 mL of blood.
In the US, the legal driving limit is 0.08% BAC. Many countries have stricter limits of 0.05% or even 0.02% for commercial drivers or people under 21. Always plan a safe ride home if drinking.
Women generally have a lower body water percentage and different alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme activity than men. This means alcohol is less diluted in women's bodies, leading to higher BAC for the same amount consumed.
The body metabolizes alcohol at approximately 0.015% BAC per hour, regardless of food, coffee, or other factors. A BAC of 0.08% would take about 5-6 hours to reach zero. Only time sobers you up.
