Calculate the square footage of one or more rooms in various shapes: rectangle, triangle, circle, or L-shape.
Area Formulas:
Rectangle: A = L x W
Triangle: A = 0.5 x Base x Height
Circle: A = pi x r^2
L-Shape: A = Rectangle 1 + Rectangle 2
For a rectangular room, multiply the length by the width. For example, a 12 x 10 foot room is 120 square feet. For irregular shapes, break the room into simpler shapes and add the areas.
Square footage is needed to purchase flooring, paint, carpet, or tile. It also helps with HVAC sizing, determining rental prices, and real estate valuation.
Use a tape measure to measure the length and width at the longest and widest points. For irregular rooms, sketch the shape, divide it into rectangles, measure each part, and add the areas.
One gallon of paint covers approximately 350-400 square feet with one coat. For walls, measure the perimeter x wall height and subtract door/window areas. Most rooms need two coats.
Calculate the total area and add 10-15% for waste from cuts and pattern matching. Flooring is typically sold by the square foot or in boxes covering a specific square footage.
Square feet is a measure of area (two dimensions). Linear feet is a measure of length (one dimension). Linear feet are used for trim, baseboards, and pipes. Square feet are used for floors, walls, and ceilings.
