Convert internet speeds between bps, Kbps, Mbps, and Gbps, and calculate file download time.
Download Time Calculator
Download Time Formula:
Time (s) = File Size (bits) / Speed (bps)
Network speeds are in bits per second. File sizes are typically in bytes. 1 byte = 8 bits. Actual download speeds may be 70-90% of advertised due to protocol overhead.
Mbps (megabits per second) is used for network speeds. MBps (megabytes per second) is used for file transfer speeds. 1 MBps = 8 Mbps.
Advertised speeds are theoretical maximums. Real-world speeds are reduced by network overhead (TCP/IP headers), server limitations, Wi-Fi interference, and ISP congestion.
A 4K movie is about 15-20 GB (120-160 Gbits). On 100 Mbps: approximately 20-27 minutes. On 1 Gbps fiber: about 2 minutes.
Bandwidth is the maximum data rate. Latency (ping) is the delay for a data packet to travel to its destination. High bandwidth does not eliminate latency.
Netflix recommends 25 Mbps for 4K Ultra HD streaming. Multiple simultaneous 4K streams multiply this requirement.
