Calculate your running or walking pace, finish time, or distance covered. Get split times for common race distances.
Running Pace Formulas:
Pace = Time / Distance
Time = Pace × Distance
Distance = Time / Pace
Speed (km/h) = 3600 / Pace (sec/km)
Running pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance, typically expressed as minutes per kilometer or minutes per mile. It is the inverse of speed.
A comfortable beginner pace is typically 6-8 minutes per km (10-13 minutes per mile). Focus on being able to hold a conversation while running rather than hitting a specific pace.
For recreational runners, a 5K pace of 5:00-7:00 min/km is common. Elite runners finish in under 3:00 min/km. The most important thing is improving your own personal best.
To convert km/h to min/km: divide 60 by your speed. For example, 10 km/h = 60/10 = 6 min/km. To convert min/km to km/h: divide 60 by your pace in minutes.
A negative split means running the second half of a race faster than the first half. It is generally considered the optimal race strategy as it avoids starting too fast and burning out.
To improve pace, incorporate interval training (short fast bursts), tempo runs (sustained hard effort), and gradually increase weekly mileage. Strength training and proper rest also contribute to pace improvements.
