Weighted GPA Formula:
GPA = Sum(Grade Points x Credits) / Sum(Credits)
Each course grade is converted to grade points (4.0 scale). The sum of points weighted by credits is divided by total credits.
The 4.0 scale is the standard US college grading system. An A equals 4.0, B equals 3.0, C equals 2.0, D equals 1.0, and F equals 0.0. Plus and minus grades adjust by 0.3.
Weighted GPA accounts for the number of credit hours per course. A 3-credit course counts 3 times as much as a 1-credit course in the GPA calculation.
Most colleges require a 3.5 or higher semester GPA for the dean's list, though requirements vary by institution.
Cumulative GPA is calculated across all semesters. Add all quality points (grade x credits) from all courses and divide by total credit hours attempted.
In this calculator, both A and A+ equal 4.0 quality points, which is the most common convention in US colleges. Some schools award 4.3 for A+.
A GPA of 3.0 (B average) is generally considered acceptable. A GPA of 3.5 or higher is considered strong. Graduate school admissions typically require 3.0 or above.
